Doesn’t take much to get hit on in college, so if this is your basis for saying you’re attractive, reconsider the possibility that you’re not pretty enough to get the attention of the guys you want. Also, you may think of yourself as “outgoing”, but it’s more likely that you come across as vapid and annoying. As indeed you do in your fml.

This shouldn’t be about your parents! It’s about you and whether you feel ready for a relationship. If you’ve had “plenty of chances,” why did you turn them all down? You really haven’t felt a genuine connection with a single guy?

It sounds like maybe you don’t actually want to date. You just feel that it’s something you “should” be doing. Don’t approach it like that. Dating should be a fun way to get to know someone and also learn something about yourself. It shouldn’t feel like a duty that you carry out to meet other people’s expectations.

Yes, definitely, but I’m just old fashioned and keep waiting to find the right person (not for marriage or anything. I just want to feel a genuine connection). I feel weird b/c I don’t really hook up/frivolously date, though I’ve had plenty of chances. Almost everyone I know does, and they expect me to too. When I get these social cues, that tell me I should be reacting a certain way given that I look a certain way/have a certain personality, it makes me feel like there’s something wrong with me when I don’t follow them.

I also feel like I’m somehow letting my parents down.

I think you usually have an idea if you are at least somewhat attractive. If you’re in good shape and take care of yourself, you’re probably pretty attractive. Should all people call themselves unattractive? A lot of people might call that low self esteem. It’d be different if she was like “i’m super hot and have a great personality.” lay off, dude.

just because she realizes she’s attractive doesn’t mean she’s vain. i never thought i was attractive (just … regular-looking) until people started telling me so often (and i was even bewildered at first). now, it’s not like i go around proclaiming it to the world, and i don’t have a sense of entitlement, but yeah, it seems that i’m pretty, and the fact that i have no problem saying so is a sign of confidence, not vanity.
